Can Machines Become Self-Sustaining?

Some futurists envision autonomous AI systems capable of maintaining themselves indefinitely. Solar-powered energy systems, robotic maintenance, automated factories, and self-repairing technologies could theoretically create an infrastructure requiring little or no human intervention.

Such a future remains speculative, but it is not entirely beyond scientific imagination. Advances in robotics, manufacturing, and renewable energy continue to reduce human involvement in many industrial processes. If combined effectively, AI might eventually oversee much of its own physical infrastructure.

Yet even a self-sustaining machine civilization would differ fundamentally from biological evolution. It would represent technological continuity rather than organic life. Whether such systems could truly adapt, evolve, and innovate without human guidance remains one of the defining questions of future science.
